Situated on seven hills, Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is growing in popularity as a city break destination. Lisbon survived an earthquake in 1755 and the oldest part of the city still retains much of its original layout.

Lisbon is broken into several distinct areas. The lower town, Alfama, is the heart of the capital, where most businesses are based and where you will find Sao Jorge Castle and the Santa Maria Maior Cathedral.

The Bairro Alto is the appropriately-named Upper Town of Lisbon, a maze-like area of streets and churches. Further to the west Belém is the site of a royal palace and several museums.

Lisbon Public Transport

Driving in Lisbon is not for the faint-hearted, with its hills making finding your way around a nightmare. Lisbon has a very good public transport system, with bus and tram lines, taxis and the metro system.

Lisbon is quite easily explored on foot and your hotel won't be far from anywhere in the city, but should you wish to use public transport it is reliable and efficient. The hills combined with the warm climate make some of the steep cobblestone streets tricky to climb, so take the tram to make the most of Lisbon's hilltop views.
